Red Newspaper

Japanese:
Red Newspaper

A vulgar newspaper that aims to increase sales by sensationalizing erotic, gossip, or exposé articles that strongly appeal to readers' emotions. Japanese newspapers gradually became more popular in the late 1880s, but this led to fierce sales competition among commercial newspapers in Tokyo. Yorozu Choho, founded in 1892 (Meiji 25) by Kuroiwa Shuroku (Ruiko), sold articles that exposed private information such as "eroticism" and the upper class's "concubine" problem, and it is said that the term "red newspaper" (red newspaper) was born from the fact that the newspaper was printed on light pink paper. Such sensational, vulgar newspapers also appeared in America around the same time. This was called yellow journalism.
