Willi Bredel

German novelist. Born in Hamburg as the son of a tobacco worker. After graduating from primary school he became an apprentice lathe operator and joined the Communist Party at the age of 16. While in prison he wrote Machine Factory N&K (1930) and became a writer. During the Nazi era he was imprisoned in a concentration camp, but defected to the Soviet Union, where he wrote the first part of his autobiographical trilogy Relatives and Acquaintances (1943-53). Returning to Germany after World War II he continued to write parts two and three, worked as the editor-in-chief of a magazine and won many awards, including the People's Prize. He is renowned as a worker's writer.

ドイツの小説家。たばこ労働者の息子としてハンブルクに生まれる。小学校を卒業して旋盤見習工となり、16歳のとき共産党に入党。獄中で『機械工場N＆K』（1930）を書き作家となる。ナチス時代は強制収容所に入れられたがソ連に亡命、自伝的三部作『親戚(しんせき)と知人たち』（1943～53）の第一部を書く。第二次世界大戦後に帰国して第二部、第三部を書き続け、雑誌の編集長をしたりして、国民賞など多くの賞に輝いた。労働者作家として名高い。
