A former town in Kamishinikawa County in the southeastern part of Toyama Prefecture. Most of the town is made up of the Hida Highlands, with the Joganji River flowing along the northern border. The Toyama Chiho Railway's Tateyama Line runs through the town. The town is primarily involved in rice farming, with sake brewing and agricultural equipment manufacturing. The town is home to Arimine Dam. In the eastern part of the town are Mount Yakushi, Mount Mitsumatarenge, and the source of the Kurobe River, and it is part of Chubu Sangaku National Park. In April 2005, it was incorporated into Toyama City along with Osawano Town in Kamishinikawa County, and Yao Town, Funaka Town, Yamada Village, and Hosoiri Village in Fushiki County. 572.32 km2 . Population 11,716 (2003).
