Shawn, Ted
Born October 21, 1891 in Kansas City, Missouri.
[Died] January 9, 1972, Orlando, Florida American dancer. Known as the "father of American dance." His real name was Edwin Myers Shawn. In 1914, he married St. Denis and founded the Denishawn School of Dance, which produced such contemporary American dancers as M. Graham and D. Humphrey. In 1931, he separated from St. Denis and the school was dissolved. In 1933, he formed a male dance troupe, challenging the prejudice against male dancers. He also organized a dance festival at Jacob's Pillow Farm and worked hard to nurture talented dancers. Her works include "Jacob's Dream," "Minuet for Drums," "Cuadro Flamenco," and "Twilight Feather," and her books include "Ruth St. Denis: Pioneer and prophet" (1920), "The American Ballet" (26), "God Who Dance" (29), "Every Little Movement" (54), and "33 Years of American Dance" (59).
