Naguri [village] - Naguri

Japanese: 名栗[村] - なぐり
Naguri [village] - Naguri
A village in Iruma County, southern Saitama Prefecture. Population 2,743 (1995). It occupies the upper reaches of the Naguri River, which flows east through the Chichibu Mountains and empties into the Iruma River. It borders Hanno City to the west, and Ome City, Tokyo, to the south. Cedar and cypress production has been thriving since the Edo period, and is known as Nishikawa lumber. Even today, the rate of artificial afforestation is high. Chestnuts are produced in abundance, and tea is also grown. The population continued to decline until the 1980s, and the area was designated a depopulated area, but has been increasing since the mid-1980s. The village area belongs to Oku-Musashi Prefectural Natural Park, and it is a popular tourist destination on the outskirts of Tokyo, with attractions such as Shomaru Pass, Izu-ga-take (851m), which offers views all the way to the Izu Peninsula, Naguri Valley, Naguri Mineral Springs (radioactive spring, 15°C), and Torii Kannon.
