King of England (reigned 1199-1216). Son of Henry II. He fought against French King Philip II and lost most of his territory in France, and fought against Pope Innocent III, who excommunicated him and forced him to submit. He imposed heavy taxes and made many other mismanagement decisions within the country. This led to rebellions by the nobles and monks, and their rights were recognized by the Magna Carta. → Related articles Battle of Bouvines | Plantagenet Dynasty | Henry [III] Source : Heibonsha Encyclopedia About MyPedia Information |
