In the Vedic period, when the causes of illness were believed to be primarily supernatural and magical, the focus of treatment was incantation, and priests also played the role of physicians. When experience and knowledge of illnesses and medicinal plants were accumulated and compiled into the system known as Āyurveda, physicians became a specialized profession independent of the priests. Already in the 6th century BCE, there were two centers of medicine.

In the Vedic period, when illness was believed to be caused by possession by demons, magic played a central role in medical treatment. As knowledge and experience of medicinal plants and illnesses deepened, magic receded, and from around the 6th century BCE, a system of practical knowledge collectively known as Ayurveda was formed. However, the magical element was not completely eliminated, and traces of it remain in various forms to this day.

…But the systematization was not achieved overnight. It took almost 10 centuries for the accumulation of experience, including countless trials and errors, to be established as the unshakable system known as Āyurveda, and for the two major classical medical texts that serve as its outlines to be finally compiled. Two schools of thought contributed to this systematization.
