1604‐56 King of Portugal. Reigned 1640-56. Founder of the House of Braganza. Born the son of Dom Teodosio, Duke of Braganza, he was elected King of Portugal as João IV when Portugal regained independence from Spain in 1640. He strengthened defenses along the border in preparation for an invasion by Spanish troops, while also completely reorganizing the national system after independence. In overseas territories, he received the support of Great Britain and recovered the colonies of Brazil and Angola from the Netherlands.
