Samarinda - Samarinda (English spelling)

A port city on the east coast of Borneo, Indonesia, facing the Makassar Strait. It is the capital of East Kalimantan Province. It has a population of 335,016 (1990), 831,608 (2018 estimate). It is located on the delta at the mouth of the Mahakam River, about 19 kilometers upstream from the river mouth. There are several waterways for navigation, but the Muara Bayor River is the most common. Large ships up to 120 meters long and 6 meters in draft can dock here. It has long been a distribution center for forest products from the hinterland, and has traded with Java and Singapore, but since the early 20th century, it has developed rapidly with the development of oil and coal in the vicinity. The inhabitants include many ethnic Chinese and Malays.

インドネシア、ボルネオ島東岸のマカッサル海峡に臨む港湾都市。東カリマンタン州の州都。人口33万5016（1990）、83万1608（2018推計）。マハカム川河口のデルタ上に位置し、河口から約19キロメートルさかのぼった所にある。航行には数本の水路があるが、普通はムアラ・バヨール川による。長さ120メートル、喫水6メートルまでの大型船が寄港できる。奥地の林産物の集散地として古くからジャワ、シンガポール方面との交易が行われたが、20世紀初頭以来、付近の石油と石炭の開発に伴い急速に発展した。住民には多数の華僑(かきょう)やマレー人が含まれる。
