1502‐57 King of Portugal. Reigned 1521-57. He inherited the Portuguese maritime empire at its height from his father, King Manuel I. After that, he was on the defensive in Asia and Africa, but he built the foundations for colonial activities in Brazil. He worked to protect and nurture the arts and sciences, and saw the flowering of Portuguese Renaissance culture. He adopted a policy of protecting Catholicism, expelling the Jews, establishing the Inquisition, and promoting overseas missionary activities.
