…Even though he was allowed to return to the capital in 1838 and was celebrated as a literary fashionable man, he did not change his attitude of looking down on the upper classes. After a long period of revision, his epic masterpiece, “The Devil,” about an eternal rebel, was set in the Caucasus and was almost completed in 1838. In 1839, he wrote “Mtsyri,” a story of a novice monk who longs for freedom but is wounded and falls ill, also set in the Caucasus. He continued to produce masterpieces of lyric poetry, such as “The Cossack Lullaby” (1840), which is a memorial to his dead mother, and “Lonely and Sad” (1840), which focuses on life. …
