A city in the northeastern part of Switzerland, in the canton of Zurich. Located in the heavily forested basin of the Tess River, it was founded around 1175 by Count Kyburg. It became part of the Habsburgs' domain in the mid-13th century, and was handed over to Zurich in 1467. It is a railway hub in eastern Switzerland, and is home to heavy machinery and cotton textile industries. It is home to historic buildings such as the Gothic St. Lorenz Cathedral (1264-1515) and the Town Hall (1781-83), Switzerland's largest technical school, the Technicum, a picture gallery, and a famous symphony orchestra.
