Indian Jain religious poet and scholar. Born into a merchant family in Gujarat, western India, he became a Jain believer. He was acquainted with King Jayasimha Siddharāja (reigned c. 1094-c. 1143), and taught the king and his successor, King Kumārapāla (reigned c. 1143-c. 1172), leading Jainism to flourish. He was an erudite scholar and wrote religious works such as the great Sanskrit epic poem Trishastiśalākā Purusha-carita (63 biographies of great men), which was a collection of biographies of Jain saints, its appendix Parishishta Parvan, and the Jain ethical text Yoga Shastra.
