Founder of the Dominican Order. Born in Spain during the time of the Crusades and the development of cities in the Middle Ages in Western Europe. He tried to preach the Gospel of Christ to the ignorant people of the time, especially the Cathars in southern France who taught the dualism of good and evil. To this end, he went from village to village preaching and praying the rosary, instead of using the sword, and set an example of poverty for people by begging as a "poor Christian." In 1215, he and his comrades founded the Order of Preachers in order to spread the truth of Christianity throughout Europe through preaching. The following year, in 1216, the order was approved by Pope Honorius III (reigned 1216-1227). This is the Dominican Order. In 1221, he ended his life of prayer and activity in Bologna, Italy, and was canonized in 1234. He loved theology in his youth, but during a famine he famously sold valuable parchment manuscripts to help people, saying, "I cannot sit on dead parchments and watch people die of hunger."
