A mountain in Saga, Ukyo Ward, Kyoto City. It is 295 meters above sea level. It is located on the north bank of the Hozu River, close to where it exits into the Kyoto Basin, and faces Arashiyama on the south bank. From the peak you can look down on the beautiful Hozu River gorge, and it has long been known as a famous spot for cherry blossoms and autumn leaves, and is also famous as a utamakura (poem of poetry). There are many historical sites from Sagano on the eastern foot to Adashino on the northeastern foot. Tenryuji Temple on the eastern foot is the head temple of the Tenryuji school of the Rinzai sect, and its garden, said to have been designed by Muso Kokushi, has been designated a historic site and special place of scenic beauty. Part of Ogurayama Mountain behind it is called Kameyama. To the north of Tenryu-ji Temple are Rakushisha, where the haiku poet Mukai Kyorai is said to have lived in seclusion, as well as Nison-in Temple and Gion-ji Temple.
