1689‐1750 King of Portugal. Reigned 1706-50. Son of Pedro II. When he ascended to the throne, Portugal was already embroiled in the War of Spanish Succession (1701-14). However, the Treaty of Utrecht in 1713 recognized Portugal's sovereignty over the Brazilian Amazon, and the following year, the Spanish returned Colonia do Sacramento in the La Plata region to Portugal. However, he did not intervene in European affairs thereafter, instead concentrating on Atlantic policy. His reign was literally the Golden Age of Brazil, when large amounts of gold and other tropical colonial products flowed into the mother country.
