King of Portugal. Reigned 1706-50. Son of Pedro II. When he ascended to the throne, Portugal was already embroiled in the War of Spanish Succession (1701-14). However, the Treaty of Utrecht in 1713 recognized Portugal's sovereignty over the Brazilian Amazon, and the following year, the Spanish returned Colonia do Sacramento in the La Plata region to Portugal. However, he did not intervene in European affairs thereafter, instead concentrating on Atlantic policy. His reign was literally the Golden Age of Brazil, when large amounts of gold and other tropical colonial products flowed into the mother country.

ポルトガル王。在位1706‐50年。ペドロ2世の子。即位したとき，すでにポルトガルはスペイン継承戦争(1701‐14)に巻き込まれていたが，1713年のユトレヒト条約によってブラジル･アマゾン地方の主権が認められ，翌年にはラ･プラタ地方のコロニア･ド･サクラメントをスペインから返還された。しかし，以後ヨーロッパ問題には介入せず，大西洋政策に専念した。その治世は文字どおりブラジルの黄金時代で，大量の金をはじめ熱帯植民地物産が本国に流入した。
