Located in northern France, about 150km northeast of Paris, it is the main city of the Aisne department in the Belmandois region. It has a population of 62,000 (1990). The city dates back to the Roman period and was named after a saint who is said to have been martyred here in the 3rd century. It became a center of pilgrimages in the early Middle Ages, and a commune was formed in the 12th century. In addition to the wool industry that has flourished since the Middle Ages, there are also industries such as machine manufacturing, and the city is connected to the north and south by the Canal of Saint-Quentin.
