The three families of Shiba, Hosokawa, and Hatakeyama were selected as Kanrei in the Muromachi Shogunate. Kanrei was the highest position in the Shogunate, assisting the Shogun and overseeing government affairs. They were initially called stewards and were appointed by Takano Moronao and Niki Yoriaki, but in 1362 (Shogun Ashikaga Yoshiakira), under Shiba Yoshimasa, they were renamed Kanrei. After 1398 (Shogun Yoshimochi), they were appointed from among the three families of the Ashikaga clan, Shiba, Hosokawa, and Hatakeyama, so they were called the Three Kanrei (Sankan) and were considered to be the highest-ranking families in the Muromachi Shogunate.
