A Neogene polypyroxene andesite stone found in areas including Fukuzawayama, east of Suwa City, Nagano Prefecture, and Iwamurada, Saku City. The stone has well-developed slab-shaped joints, which make it easy to quarry slab-shaped stone. The cracks in the joints are brownish due to contamination by limonite, but the fresh parts inside are pale purple-gray or pale blue-gray. It is hard and highly resistant to pressure and fire, but is softer than granite and easier to work with. The name of this stone comes from its properties of being as hard as iron and splitting flat. It is used for paving stones and decorative building materials. [Saito Yasuji] [Reference] | | |Source: Shogakukan Encyclopedia Nipponica About Encyclopedia Nipponica Information | Legend |
