Iron flat stone

A Neogene polypyroxene andesite stone found in areas including Fukuzawayama, east of Suwa City, Nagano Prefecture, and Iwamurada, Saku City. The stone has well-developed slab-shaped joints, which make it easy to quarry slab-shaped stone. The cracks in the joints are brownish due to contamination by limonite, but the fresh parts inside are pale purple-gray or pale blue-gray. It is hard and highly resistant to pressure and fire, but is softer than granite and easier to work with. The name of this stone comes from its properties of being as hard as iron and splitting flat. It is used for paving stones and decorative building materials.

長野県諏訪(すわ)市東方の福沢山をはじめとして、佐久(さく)市岩村田(いわむらだ)にわたって産出する新第三紀の複輝石安山岩の石材。板状節理が発達しており、それを利用して板状の石材が容易に採石される。割れ目である節理面は褐鉄鉱などによる汚染のため褐色を帯びているが、内部の新鮮な部分は淡紫灰色あるいは淡青灰色を呈する。硬くて耐圧・耐火性に富むが、花崗(かこう)岩よりは軟らかく加工しやすい。石材名は、鉄のように硬くて、平らに割れるという性質に由来する。敷石や装飾用建材に利用される。
