A leading European manufacturer of comprehensive photography (photographic film, cameras, etc.). Its predecessors were the German company Agfa (named after the initials of Aktiengesellschaft für Anilinfabrikation (dye factory)), a pioneer in color film technology founded in 1867, and the Belgian company Gevaert Photo Manufacturing Co., Ltd., founded in 1894. In 1964, the two companies merged to form Agfa-Gevaert (West Germany), headquartered in Leverkusen, and Agfa-Gevaert (Belgium), headquartered in Antwerp.

ヨーロッパを代表する総合写真(写真フィルム，カメラ等)メーカー。前身は，1867年創立のカラーフィルム技術の先駆者であったドイツのアグファ社(Aktiengesellschaft für Anilinfabrikation(染料工場の意)の頭文字をとって命名。1925年イーゲー･ファルベン社の傘下，52年バイエル社の傘下になる)と，1894年創立のベルギーのゲバルト写真製造社である。1964年両者は事業を統合し，レバークーゼンに本社を置くアグファ･ゲバルト社(西ドイツ)とアントワープに本社を置くアグファ･ゲバルト社(ベルギー)が設立された。
