An old town in Kita Matsuura County on the west coast of the Kita Matsuura Peninsula in northern Nagasaki Prefecture. It flourished as a coal mining town from the Edo period, but the entire mine was closed in 1963 due to the economic downturn. The town is active in mandarin orange cultivation and pearl farming. The Matsuura Railway runs through the town. The coast and the Kujuku Islands offshore belong to Saikai National Park. 長崎県北部,北松浦半島西岸の北松浦郡の旧町。江戸時代から開坑の炭鉱町として栄えたが,不況のため1963年全山閉山した。ミカン栽培,真珠養殖などを営む。松浦鉄道が通じる。海岸と沖の九十九(くじゅうく)島は西海国立公園に属する。2010年3月北松浦郡江迎町と佐世保市へ編入。30.24km2。5390人(2005)。
