Kamiakutsu

...The central settlement, Ujiie, was a post town on the Oshu Kaido road in the early modern period, and became the center of southern Shioya County after the Tohoku Main Line was rerouted and Ujiie Station was built in 1898. Kamiakutsu, located at the southwest end, flourished as the terminus of Kinugawa shipping until the Meiji period. Rice fields were developed after the Ichinobori irrigation canal, which draws water from the Kinugawa River, was excavated by Yamazaki Hanzo, a senior retainer of the Utsunomiya Domain, in 1656 (Meireki 2), and cultivated land still accounts for a large proportion of the total area.
