A former town in Kagoshima County, Kagoshima Prefecture, occupying the western part of Sakurajima. After the Taisho eruption in 1914, when the island became connected to the Osumi Peninsula, the cultivation of sweet potatoes, sugarcane, and tobacco was switched to fruit and vegetable cultivation, with Unshu mandarins, Sakurajima small mandarins, loquats, and Sakurajima radishes being cultivated. Hakamagoshi, which is home to Sakurajima Port, is the center of tourism on the island, and is connected to Kagoshima Port on the opposite shore by ferry. In November 2004, it was incorporated into Kagoshima City along with Yoshida Town in Kagoshima County, Kiire Town in Ibusuki County, Matsumoto Town in Hioki County, and Koriyama Town. 32.20 km2 . 4,782 people (2003).
