1739‐1813 Pioneer of the Bulgarian national revival movement. His real name was Stojko Vladislavov. He was born in the town of Kotel in eastern Bulgaria and educated in Greek. He was ordained at Kotel in 1762 and thereafter devoted himself to manuscripts, writing, and teaching the mother tongue. He studied at Athos and, despite persecution by Greek clergy and Turkish authorities, became bishop of Vratsa in western Bulgaria in 1794. Due to the unstable international situation in the Balkans, he emigrated to Bucharest in 1803, and during the Russo-Turkish War of 1806-12, he was the first to organize a committee of Bulgarian settlers on the north bank of the Danube, setting the stage for the Bulgarian movement for autonomy.
