Pioneer of the Bulgarian national revival movement. His real name was Stojko Vladislavov. He was born in the town of Kotel in eastern Bulgaria and educated in Greek. He was ordained at Kotel in 1762 and thereafter devoted himself to manuscripts, writing, and teaching the mother tongue. He studied at Athos and, despite persecution by Greek clergy and Turkish authorities, became bishop of Vratsa in western Bulgaria in 1794. Due to the unstable international situation in the Balkans, he emigrated to Bucharest in 1803, and during the Russo-Turkish War of 1806-12, he was the first to organize a committee of Bulgarian settlers on the north bank of the Danube, setting the stage for the Bulgarian movement for autonomy.

ブルガリア民族の再生運動の先駆者。本名ブラディスラボフStojko Vladislavov。ブルガリア東部の町コテルに生まれ，ギリシア語の教育をうけた。1762年コテルで聖職につき，以後写本や著述や母語教育に力を注いだ。アトスに学び，ギリシア聖職者やトルコ官憲の迫害にもあったが，1794年ブルガリア西部ブラツァの主教になった。バルカンの不穏な国際情勢のため1803年ブカレストへ移住，1806‐12年の露土戦争の際にはドナウ北岸のブルガリア人移住者を組織した委員会を初めてつくり，ブルガリア人の自治要求運動に先鞭をつけた。
