…Individual damage to this system is unlikely, but if higher structures between the cerebrum and diencephalon are damaged, the excitation of this system, which is inhibited by these areas, increases, and various forms of muscle tone abnormalities are observed. If the damage is above the red nucleus, the patient assumes a decortication posture with the hands flexed and the feet extended, whereas if the damage is in the upper brainstem below the red nucleus, the patient assumes a decerebrate posture.
[Cerebellar movement disorder]
This is a regulatory system involving the cerebellum, pons, and olivary nucleus, and does not directly control the final common pathway, but indirectly by acting on the regulatory systems of the pyramidal tract system and the brainstem reticular system.
