Born: March 2, 1817, Nagyssaronta Died October 22, 1882. Hungarian poet from Budapest. Born into a poor peasant family, he studied hard and became a teacher and civil servant. In 1845, he won a literature prize for his satirical poem "The Lost Constitution," and began his career as a poet. The following year, he published "Toldi," an epic poem about a 14th-century Hungarian national hero, for which he won a second literature prize and became famous. He also formed a friendship with the contemporary revolutionary patriotic poet Petöfi, and participated in the Hungarian National Revolution of 1848-1849, after which he retired to the countryside for a time. After "Toldi estéje" (1854), he returned to the capital and wrote "Toldi szerelme" (79), completing the Toldi trilogy. He established his position as a national poet with works such as the epic poem "The Death of Buda" (63) and the ballad "A Walesi Bárdok" (57), both based on the legend of the founding of Hungary.
