A type of comedy-themed vaudeville show. It is a one-man performance that mainly involves humorous storytelling, and differs from rakugo in that it does not focus on a plot or punch line. It was first performed by Yamano Ichiro and Tokugawa Musei in 1926 (Taisho 15) at the first performance of the Nayamashi-kai, a hidden talent competition for film commentators (film commentators). It is said that Otsuji Shiro named it mandan after the idea of manga. Later, when they lost their jobs with the advent of talkies, they began to perform mandan in earnest, and as the term mandan became more widely used, more and more people began to specialize in it, and it came to occupy an important part of comedy shows at vaudeville shows and on TV. Some of them are performed with instruments such as the ukulele or shamisen, and some are performed with singing, while others are performed with a variation of three to five or six people performing a dialogue. It is called "ukulele manzai" or "pop manzai," and when performed by multiple people it is often called "boys' manzai."
