Gonbad-e Kāvūs

Gumbad is a high-tower tomb (mausoleum) located east of Gorgan in Iran. It is one of the masterpieces of early Islamic architecture. It was built in 1006-07 by order of Qabus, a ruler of the Ziyarid dynasty who ruled the region south of the Caspian Sea. In addition to its function as a tomb, it is thought to have also served as a symbol of the ruler's authority. The majestic cylindrical tower, over 51m in height, is made of brick and has a conical roof at the top. The interior of the tower is hollow and does not contain a tomb chamber. The walls have protruding brim-like rims and a band of inscriptions in Kufic script, making it extremely simple.

イランのゴルガーン東方に残る高塔形墓廟(グンバド)。初期イスラム建築の傑作の一つ。1006∥07年に，カスピ海南岸地方を支配したジヤール朝の君主カーブースの命で建造された。墓廟という機能のほかに支配者の権威を象徴する役割をも果たしたと考えられる。高さ51mを超す雄大な円筒状の塔は煉瓦造りで，頂部の屋根は円錐形。塔内は空洞で墓室はない。壁面には突出するつば状の突縁があるほか，クーフィー体による銘文帯があるのみで，きわめて素朴である。
