A town in Kurate County in the midstream of the Onga River in north-central Fukuoka Prefecture. The main settlement is Katsuno, which is on the Chikuho Main Line. It has been a coal mining town in the Chikuho coalfields since the mid-Meiji period, but coal rationalization policies since 1955 have led to successive closures of coal mines, causing damage from mining such as the submersion of 90% of rice paddies. Industrialization is currently underway with the creation of industrial parks. The Heisei Chikuho Railway runs through the town. 14.18 km2 . 8,602 people (2010). 福岡県中北部,遠賀(おんが)川中流部の鞍手郡の町。中心集落は筑豊本線が通じる勝野。明治中期以降筑豊炭田の炭鉱町であったが,1955年以降の石炭合理化政策により炭鉱の閉山が相つぎ,水田の90%が水没するなどの鉱害を受けた。工業団地造成による工業化が進められている。平成筑豊鉄道が通じる。14.18km2。8602人(2010)。
