Chohachi Irie

Japanese: 入江長八 - いりえちょうはち

1815-1889 A trowel painter from the late Edo to Meiji period.
Born on August 5, 1819. Born into a farming family in Matsuzaki Village, Izu (Shizuoka Prefecture). At around the age of 20, he went to Edo, where he studied painting under Kita Takekiyo while working as a plasterer. He perfected trowel painting, a type of painting that uses colored plaster reliefs. He made a name for himself with the decoration of the Yakushido Hall in Kayabacho. He created works for various temples in his hometown and Edo, and won an award at the Domestic Industrial Exposition in 1877. He passed away on October 8, 1889. He was 75 years old. He was commonly known as Izu Chohachi and Etake Chohachi. His pen names were Kendo and Tenyu. His most famous work is the trowel painting of the main hall of Jokanji Temple in Matsuzaki Town, Shizuoka Prefecture.

文化12年8月5日生まれ。伊豆(いず)松崎村(静岡県)の農家の出身。20歳ごろ江戸に出,左官業のかたわら喜多武清に絵をまなぶ。漆喰(しっくい)の浮き彫りに彩色した鏝絵を大成。茅場町(かやばちょう)薬師堂の装飾で名をあげた。郷里や江戸の諸寺で制作し,明治10年内国勧業博覧会で受賞。明治22年10月8日死去。75歳。通称は伊豆長八,江竹長八。号は乾道,天祐。代表作は静岡県松崎町浄感寺の本堂鏝絵。
