A long romance novel by Thailand's greatest poet, Sunthong Phu (1785-1855). It is written in eight-line kloun form with a unique, gorgeous rhyming scheme, and consists of 64 chapters, the largest number for an individual work in classical history. The year of completion is unknown. His achievement in popularizing literature by making full use of simple, everyday vocabulary is enormous. Prince Phra Apaimani sets out on a journey to study with his younger brother, learning the art of the Magic Flute, and traveling around the world, he experiences the most fantastical things. In an era when European power was spreading eastward, the author absorbed foreign knowledge widely by word of mouth, and spread his imagination from Southeast Asia to India and Europe, developing the story on a grand scale, and describing the subtleties of war, love, morals, and human feelings with elegant writing.
