…In the early modern period, the town was a key transportation point, a junction of the Iida Highway, which connected Nagoya and Iida, and the Asuke Highway, which led to Okazaki. It flourished as a transit market for salt and miscellaneous goods, and as a post town. Salt known as Asuke salt was produced in salt fields near the mouth of the Yahagi River, prepared by a salt wholesaler in Asuke, and then sent to the Shinshu Ina area. Most of the town area is forest, and there is little arable land, but rice, vegetable cultivation, pig farming, chicken farming, and forestry are mainly carried out. …
