An atoll in the central Pacific Ocean, north of the Line Islands. Also called Teraina Island. Circumference 50 km, land area 35 km2, population 445 (1985). The island was named after Edmund Fanning, who discovered it aboard the ship Betsy in 1798. It was annexed by Britain in 1888, but today it is part of the Republic of Kiribati (independent in 1979) along with the Gilbert and Phoenix Islands. Most of the island is owned by a subsidiary of the Sydney-based Barnes Phillip Company, and coconut plantations are run by workers from the Gilbert Islands.
