Tokuyama [city] - Tokuyama

Japanese: 徳山[市] - とくやま
Tokuyama [city] - Tokuyama
An old city in the central-southern part of Yamaguchi Prefecture. It was incorporated as a city in 1935. It faces Ryo Bay on the Suo-Nada Sea and developed as a castle town of the Tokuyama Domain. It is connected to the Sanyo Main Line, the Shinkansen, and the Sanyo Expressway. Since the establishment of a naval coal briquettes (later a fuel depot) in 1904, it has become an important location for land and sea transportation, and an industrial city producing soda, iron plates, etc. After World War II, refineries and other facilities were established on the site of the fuel depot, and it developed into a petrochemical complex. Together with the factories of the neighboring former Shinnanyo City, it forms the Shunan Petrochemical Industrial Zone. The chemical industry accounts for 54.8% of the total industrial shipment value (1993). Mount Taika on the Oshima Peninsula is a scenic spot in the Seto Inland Sea National Park. Tokuyama Zoo, the largest in the Chugoku region, is located here, and Yuno Onsen springs can be found in the west. In April 2003, the city of Shunan merged with Shinnanyo City, Kumage Town in Kumage District, and Shikano Town in Tsuno District to form Shunan City. Area: 339.83 km2 . Population: 104,658 (2000).
