France's national theater (company). Also known as "House of Molière" and "Théâtre Richelieu" due to its location. Founded in 1680 by royal decree of King Louis XIV, it was originally the troupe of Molière, a great figure in the world of comedy. After Molière's death in 1673, the troupe continued to exist by absorbing actors from the dissolved Théâtre du Marais, but was further merged with the Hôtel de Bourgogne (Théâtre de Bourgogne), the home of tragedy at the time, by the same royal decree, and was established as a royal theater company with exclusive rights to perform plays in Paris and its surrounding areas (with the exception of Italian theater companies), with assets including tragedies by Corneille and Racine and comedies by Molière.
