A ritual co-parenting practiced in Latin America and other areas of Spanish influence. Godparents complement the parents in their role of advising and assisting the child, and the child is treated with respect and obedience. Godparents originally had a ritual role of naming the child at the baptismal ceremony in the Catholic Church in Europe, but in Latin America their role has been expanded to include a close personal relationship between the godparent and the child's parents (especially the father) that goes beyond kinship.
