A Chinese physician. He wrote the 12 volumes of the oldest surviving medical text on acupuncture and moxibustion, the Acupuncture and Moxibustion Jia Yi Jing (also known as the Huangdi's Three Parts of Acupuncture and Moxibustion Jia Yi Jing and the Huangdi Jia Yi Jing, commonly known as the Jia Yi Jing), and established the foundations of acupuncture and moxibustion. His courtesy name was Shi'an, his childhood name was Jing, and he called himself Master Xuan'an. He was from Anding Chaona (Chaona Town, Lingtai County, Gansu Province). He lived with his uncle in Xin'an, but even at the age of 20 he had no interest in studying and was a dissolute playboy. He was inspired by his aunt's admonitions and became indignant, devoting himself to his studies, and since he was poor, he studied while also working on farm work. He studied a wide range of books, and even when he later developed cold sores, he never put his books down, and people called him a "bookworm." He was repeatedly invited to become a government official by Emperor Wu of the Jin Dynasty (reigned 265-290), but he never served in his lifetime. He wrote many books, including "The Century of Emperors," "Biographies of Gao Shi Huang," "Biographies of Yi Shi Huang," and "Biographies of Heroic Women."
