In the Middle Ages, it was also written as Kawagoe or Kawahi. Kawagoe Manor, a territory of Shin-Hiyoshi Shrine, was established at the end of the Heian period on the natural levees of the alluvial lowlands on both sides of the Irumagawa River. Perhaps the place name refers to an area that existed across the river.
