[The birth and rise of serial dramas]
In the United States, during the first few years of the 20th century, low-cost, popular movie theaters called "nickelodeons" coexisted with first-class movie theaters, and it is said that the popular movie theaters' practice of screening one major film in installments each week played a role in the birth of the "film series." This series, which has the same characters but does not necessarily have a continuity in story, was produced from around 1908 in France and Germany, starting with the Bronco Billy series by the American Essanay Company. However, the most popular films or serials were Victorin Jasset's (1862-1913) Nick Carter (1908) and Zigoma (1911), which were based on popular detective novels in France, and Louis Feuillade's Fantômas (1913). The success of Fantômas, which was said to reflect "petty-bourgeois romanticism," had a decisive impact on European countries and especially on America. After 1913, serials developed rapidly in America.

[連続活劇の誕生と隆盛]
 アメリカでは20世紀初めの数年間,〈ニッケルオデオン〉と呼ばれた低料金の大衆的な映画館と一流映画館が共存し,大衆的な映画館では1本の大作映画を週ごとに分割して上映する習慣のあったことが,〈連続映画〉の誕生に一つの役割を果たしたともいわれている。登場人物は共通しているが,物語はかならずしも連続していないこのシリーズものは,1908年ころからアメリカのエッサネー社の《ブロンコ・ビリー》シリーズをはじめフランスやドイツでもつくられていたが,いわゆる連続映画あるいは連続活劇として人気をよんだ作品は,フランスで流行した大衆的な探偵小説シリーズによったビクトラン・ジャッセVictorin Jasset(1862‐1913)監督の《ニック・カーター》(1908),《ジゴマ》(1911)やルイ・フイヤード監督の《ファントマ》(1913)などで,なかでも〈小市民的ロマン主義〉を反映しているといわれた《ファントマ》の成功は,ヨーロッパの各国をはじめとくにアメリカに決定的な影響をあたえた。 1913年以後,連続活劇はアメリカで急速に発達する。…
