A perennial plant of the Liliaceae family (APG classification: Liliaceae). The underground stem is long and thin, running horizontally underground, 3-5 mm in diameter. The aboveground stem is 10-40 cm tall and glabrous. Usually, four leaves grow in whorls, but the leaves show a typical geographical cline, with those growing from Hokkaido to the Hokuriku region of Honshu being broad and broadly ovate to ovate. Those growing in the Chubu and southwestern regions of Honshu, Shikoku, and Kyushu have gradually narrower leaves and are lanceolate. The flower stalk also varies greatly from individual to individual, from 0.3 to 15 cm. From May to July, one flower is borne at the apex of the stem, with four green outer tepals and no inner tepals. The fruit is a spherical berry 1-1.2 cm in diameter that ripens black in autumn. It grows in deciduous forests in the low mountains to coniferous forests in the lower subalpine zone from Hokkaido to Kyushu.
