A general term for insects of the family Pieridae in the order Lepidoptera. There are over 1,000 species worldwide, and they are generally small to medium-sized butterflies. About 30 species, including vagrants, are known in Japan. The species with white wings stand out, hence the name 'white butterfly', but there are also many yellow or orange ones, and many black ones in the subtropics and tropics. There are no species in this family with a tail. The Pieridae is the largest pierid butterfly in the world. Japanese species are divided into three subfamilies. Many of the subfamily of Pieridae have white wings with black, yellow, orange, or other markings, and representative species include the cabbage whites, the pygmy whites, the Siberian whites, and the Pieridae.
