Treaty of Wedmore

At the time of his accession, most of the eastern half of England had been under the control of the Vikings (Danes), who had invaded and settled there, and the remaining land was also under their control. Alfred rallied the English army to fight, and at first he was often defeated and in a difficult position, but in 878 he won the Battle of Edington, and in the Treaty of Wedmore he established a border with the Vikings and converted their king, Guthrum, to Christianity. From then on, the Viking-occupied areas were called the Danelaw (the land where the laws and customs of the Dane were practiced).
