It refers to manga that emphasizes realistic drama rather than simple humor, but the definition is still vague. Around 1955, Matsumoto Masahiko and Tatsumi Yoshihiro, the leading artists of rental manga in Osaka, called their own manga komaga and gekiga to distinguish them from existing manga. The term gekiga first appeared in manga magazines in issue 16 of Kage, a rental manga short story collection published in Osaka in 1958. The drawing style focused on drama rather than humor, and as stated in the gekiga declaration of the Gekiga Kobo group that Tatsumi and others formed in 1959, they aimed to be "entertaining reading material for the transitional period from childhood to adulthood." The term gekiga became more common with Sanpei Shirato's Ninja Bugeicho (1959-62, 17 volumes), the founding of Garo (64), which was billed as a gekiga magazine, and the appearance of Mizuki Shigeru, Tsuge Yoshiharu, and others. Many manga artists, such as Saito Takao, Mizushima Shinji, and Sato Masaaki, started out as manga artists.
