...After studying at the universities of Halle and Göttingen, he worked for the Prussian government in mining surveys and also conducted surveys in various parts of Europe. After finding that his teacher Werner's theory of hydrogenesis did not match the facts of nature, he and his friend A. von Humboldt became volcanologists, believing that underground volcanic forces move the earth and create mountains. After investigating the volcanoes of the Canary Islands, he proposed the "elevated crater theory" for the formation of volcanoes, and further believed that the Alps were formed by the uplift of igneous rocks that penetrated underground.
