…Together with the O'Donnells, they resisted the Norman invasion and the invasion of Tudor England. The 16th century leader Conn O'Neill (c. 1484-1559) fought against the English army, then travelled to England, presented his estates to Henry VIII, and was re-granted the title of Earl of Tyrone. His son Shane O'Neill (1530-67) destroyed Conn's illegitimate son Matthew, who Elizabeth I recognized as his heir, and continued to fight against the English army, gradually gaining control over the whole of Ulster and aiming for complete independence, but was defeated by the army of the O'Donnells, who had long been in conflict over the dominance of Ulster, and was killed by his allies, the MacDonnells. …
