…Italian art historian. Born in Modena. Became professor at the University of Turin at the age of 30, but resigned in 1931 in opposition to Fascism, and fled to Paris and then America. After the war, he returned to Italy and was professor at the University of Rome until 1960. After making a precocious debut with Studies in Caravaggio (1911), he came to the idea that art is made up of two things: the historical conditions surrounding the artist at that time, that is, "taste," and the "creative talent" that seeks to overcome this, and he attempted to explore the history of "taste" in "History of Art Criticism" (1936). …
