Ruler - Jogi (English spelling) rule

A drafting tool used to draw straight or curved lines. It is also written as a set block. There are T-squares and set squares for drawing straight lines, and French curves and flexible set squares for drawing curved lines. They are made from dried materials such as cypress, cherry, and teak. Some T-squares and set squares have bamboo or celluloid attached to the part where the lines are drawn. There are also plastic set squares. A French curve is a ruler made by combining curves of various shapes, and is used to draw curves of any shape. A flexible set square is a metal or plastic strip with a lead rod inserted into the back, and is useful for drawing longer curves than a French curve.

There is also a special L-shaped measuring tool called a square that is used as a standard for right angles in production sites, and is used for reference, work, and inspection. There is also a curved ruler called a curve ruler that is used for dressmaking to draw curves such as collars and sleeves.

直線または曲線を引くための製図用具。定木とも書く。直線を引くものとしてはT定規、三角定規、曲線用には雲形定規、たわみ定規などがある。材料としてはヒノキ、サクラ、チークなどを乾燥してつくられる。T定規、三角定規には線を引く部分にタケ、セルロイドなどを取り付けたものもある。プラスチック製の三角定規もある。いろいろの形の曲線を組み合わせて一つの定規としたものが雲形定規で、任意の形の曲線を描くのに用いられている。たわみ定規は、金属またはプラスチックの帯の背面に鉛の棒を入れたもので、雲形定規よりも長い曲線を描くのに便利である。

　特殊なものとして、生産現場で直角の標準となるL型の測定工具もあり、スコヤとよばれ、基準用、工作用、検査用として用いられている。また洋裁用として襟や袖(そで)などの曲線の製図に用いられるカーブ尺（なまこ尺）とよばれている曲線定規もある。
