A perennial plant of the Umbelliferae family that grows in sunny alpine grasslands (illustration). The Japanese name comes from the fact that the leaves are finely divided like carrots and that they were common on Mt. Shirane in Nikko. The stem is upright, 7-40 cm tall, and hairless overall. The basal leaves are finely divided into three pinnates, with terminal lobes 1-3 mm wide. The leaves on the stem become smaller toward the top, and are divided into one or two pinnates. Many flowers bloom in small compound umbels at the ends of the stems from August to September, and the inflorescences have one or two linear involucre bracts.
