Aquavit - Aquavit (English spelling)

A spirit with an alcohol content of 40-45% produced in Scandinavian countries such as Denmark, Norway, and Sweden. The name comes from the Latin aqua vitae (water of life). The raw materials, potatoes and rye, are saccharified with malt and fermented. Distillation is performed using a continuous still to obtain 95% pure alcohol. This is diluted to about 60%, and herbs, roots, and bark, mainly caraway seeds, are added, and the spirit is distilled in a pot still.

デンマーク、ノルウェー、スウェーデンなどスカンジナビア諸国でつくられるアルコール分40～45％のスピリッツ。この名前はラテン語のaqua vitae（生命の水）からきている。原料のジャガイモやライムギを麦芽で糖化し、発酵させる。蒸留は連続蒸留機によって95％の純正なアルコールをとる。これを約60％に薄め、キャラウェーの実を主とした草根木皮を加えて、ポットスチルで蒸留する。
