A city in central Nagano Prefecture. It was incorporated as a city in 1959. The city center is located at the southern end of the Matsumoto Basin, and the name comes from the fact that it is the end of the salt import route. It has long been a key transportation point, and is a former post town at the junction of the Nakasendo and Hokkoku Kaido roads. It is also a junction of the Chuo Main Line and the Shinonoi Line, and the Nagano Expressway opened in 1988, and it has developed as a satellite city of Matsumoto City to the north. In recent years, a prefectural industrial complex has been developed, and industries such as chemical fertilizers, precision machinery, and optics have developed. Wine is also brewed using grapes from Kikyogahara. There is Shiojiri Pass, and the Takabocchi Plateau area in the east belongs to the Yatsugatake Chushin Highlands Quasi-National Park. In the south, the townscape of a post town on the Nakasendo road remains well preserved, and Narai-juku is designated as a national preservation district for groups of traditional buildings. 長野県中部の市。1959年市制。中心市街は松本盆地の南端にあり,地名は塩の移入路の終点に当たることに由来。古くから交通の要地で,中山道と北国街道の分岐点に当たる旧宿場町。中央本線と篠ノ井線の分岐点で,1988年長野自動車道が開通し,北隣の松本市の衛星都市として発展している。近年は県営工業団地が造成され,化学肥料,精密機械,光学などの工業が発達している。桔梗(ききょう)ヶ原のブドウを原料とする醸造も行われる。塩尻峠があり,東部の高ボッチ高原一帯は八ヶ岳中信高原国定公園に属する。南部には中山道の宿場町の町並がよく残り,国の伝統的建造物群保存地区に指定されている奈良井宿がある。2005年4月木曾郡楢川村を編入。289.98km2。6万7670人(2010)。
